Anne Lamott is the author of five books and a teacher of writing in San Francisco. This short book is presented as a series of lessons on the art and business of writing--what it means to live a writer's life. But Lamott is so honest about both the joys and pain of this life and has such intelligence and humor, that it becomes a manual of life and self-discovery. This is a wonderful book. Also, check out Anne's newest novel, Crooked Little Hart, one of the best fiction books I've read this year.

The Webmaster's Library

I'm learning the tricks of the Webmaster trade, and this means UNIX and the most popular UNIX Web server, Apache.

While setting up and administering your own, mult-user, Unix system is fairly complicated, it is, also, astonishingly cheap and lots of fun. All you need is a good X86 or pentium, system, a few hundred megabytes of hard disk space, and a modem.

There are different flavors of UNIX. For its Power and Price, Linux is my choice. These books will get you started and provide a solid reference library.

Slackware Linux, Installation & Getting Started

This is the Slackware distribution of Linux 2.0.0. It includes most of the other Internet server software that you'll want to play with, including Apache, ftp, telnet, wais, and PERL. You can run Linux directly from the CD and experiment with it before you start messing with the partitions on your hard drives.

This terrific reference book condenses the material of at least five huge volumes on Web site construction into a single small one. Sections cover HTML, CGI, HTTP, JavaScript, and server configurations.

Of all the HTML books now on the market (way too many, IMO), this is the only one that's worth your money. HTML is just too easy -- the Web abounds in free HTML guides, tutorials and FAQs, and anyone is free to look at anyone else's source for examples. Buying a book to learn HTML is a waste of money, however, a good HTML reference book is worth buying and this is the best. Published this past Spring, it contains the latestest extensions and (proposed) standards. Information is clear and well organized and a lot faster to find than on the Web.

Published this year, JavaScript: The Definitive Guide is a complete, up-to-date reference for JavaScript 1.1, the scripting language for writing client-side Web applications. But, more than that, it serves as a learning guide to Object Oriented Programming (OOP) and the emerging Document Object Model (DOM) that today's Webmaster must be familiar with. The book provides useful examples and carefully notes what features work with MSIE 3.0's Jscript, which only supports a limited number of JavaScript 1.1's objects and methods.
