Larry Aronson's windsurfing page
I've been sailing boards for 15 years now, mostly Summers on the Great South Bay which separates
Fire Island from Long Island, New York
(see map below).
In Winter, I try to vacation somewhere that has windsurfing. Last February, I discovered Bonaire.
A tiny Dutch island 50 miles off of the north coast of Venuzuela. Man, this is one friendly island.
Most of the tourists come for the diving which is concentrated on the western, leeward side of Bonaire
with its beautiful sunsets.
The windsurfing is on the largely-uninhabitated windward side at
Lac Bay - a large, georgously clear, shallow, reef-protected bay with constant, moderate trade winds.
I spent three full days at Jibe City and fill in love with the new, ultra-wide, Formula boards.
I also highly recommend the Bitter End Yacht Club
in Virgin Gorda, BVI, where Lynne and I vacationed several times in the late '90s.
What a beautiful place. Sailing is good, excellent equipment and plenty of
other activities when the winds are light.
Places Sailed:
- Lac Bay, Bonaire
- Windsurfing perfection. Sailed Bic Techno 283 and Fanatic X-Rays.
- Bitter End Yacht Club, Virgin Gorda
- Island hopping on a Mistral Escape with a 7.4 m2 UP sail.
- Key West
- Two days at a friend's condo, one too windy, the other too light.
- Chenay Bay, St Croix
- Nice place, good equipment. Learned how to jibe here.
- Cabarete, Dominican Rep.
- Mar. 1993, during the great storm. Bic center gets an A for equipment, hospitality and fun.
I wrote a journal there.
- Phuket, Thailand
- Nov. 1989 at the Club Med. Fantastic place but the Tiga boards and sail weren't very good. Cut my foot on coral.
- Ko Samui, Thailand
- Jan. 1991 during the Gulf War. Nice place to be, very relaxed. Light air.

- Mistral Superlight (11' 8", 230 l.)

Windsurfing on the WWW
The list of windsurfing resources on the Internet is growing.
I've found a few sites that can do a better job of maintaining a list of links than I can.
-
- Check out Luigi Semenzato's great T-shirts.
-
- Lots of windsurfing links and other resources.
-
- From Windzone.
-
- which has a great list of sites in the Northeast USA.
-
- a zine with cool picts and more.
